What are the regulations for obtaining a learner's permit?

A. A learner's permit allows a person to improve his driving skills by legally driving on the highway while being accompanied by a licensed parent, guardian or a licensed adult at least age twenty-one or older or a licensed sibling at least age eighteen or older.

In order to apply for a Louisiana learner's permit, the applicant must:
  • Proof of Residency
  • have proof of legal presence in the country,
  • have completed the appropriate driver education course for his age,
Under 18 - The 38 hour driver education course consists of 30 hour classroom instruction and 8 hours behind the wheel instruction.
18 and Over - The pre-licensing course consists of 6 hour classroom instruction and 8 hours behind the wheel instruction.
  • meet minimum physical and mental requirements and pass a vision and knowledge test.
  • Minors must provide current proof of school enrollment
Bring the documents listed below to a local Office of Motor Vehicles to apply for a learner's permit.
The requirements for the age categories are listed below. 

LEARNERS PERMIT 15 - 17 YEARS OLD
Requirements:
Home schooled students must present the Home Study Approval Notification Letter or the Registered Non public School: Registration Confirmation 
letter from the Louisiana Department of Education. Acceptable methods of payment are as follows: 

Credit cards, debt cards, and money orders. A transaction fee will be assessed for payments made with a credit/debit card as indicated below:
Credit/Debit - $1.25 plus 1% of transaction total

If you do not have the original Social Security Card, you will need to provide an additional secondary document

A 15 year old cannot get an Intermediate license until he is 16 years old and has had the Learners Permit for a minimum of 180 days.


LEARNERS PERMIT 18 YEARS OLD AND OLDER
Requirements:
